The RMS Group Completes Two Southern California Fixed Based Operation Projects for Atlantic Aviation

New facilities at Los Angeles International Airport and Santa Barbara Municipal Airport are designed to accommodate private airplanes and their passengers.

WESTMINSTER, CALIF– January 28, 2008 –- On February 21, 2008, when Dallas, Texas-based Atlantic Aviation celebrates the grand opening of its new fixed based operation (FBO) at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), it will mark the second Atlantic Aviation FBO in southern California built by The RMS Group, based in Westminster, Calif.

Atlantic Aviation’s new FBO at LAX consists of a 350,000 square foot apron (also known as a ramp) for airplane parking, a 10,060 square foot terminal and a landscaped parking lot. The RMS Group served as general contractor and construction manager for the $12 million project.

The design and construction process involved meeting the regulations of numerous federal and local authorities, ranging from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to the City of Los Angeles. To upgrade the apron, the aging portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement was replaced with asphalt concrete (AC) pavement. The apron had to meet FAA specifications for heavy aircraft parking areas and California Department of Transportation specifications for the portion of the apron that accommodates lighter-weight aircraft.

The Atlantic Aviation terminal offers a plush reception area for passengers, a pilot’s lounge, meeting rooms and other amenities. Finishes include laminated shattered glass walls, stone tile flooring and custom marble sink restroom basins.

International travelers are screened in the terminal’s United States Customs area, which comprises about one-quarter of the building. The landscaped parking lot in front of the building provides 141 parking spaces.

The Atlantic Aviation FBO at Santa Barbara Municipal Airport opened its doors in the fall of 2007. The $4 million project undertaken by The RMS Group involved renovating the FBO terminal as well as expanding the airport apron and the terminal parking lot. The terminal expansion added approximately 2,000 square feet to the building, bringing it to 4,000 square feet.

The original terminal was housed in a 1950’s-era building that was in disrepair, but was prohibited by a city ordinance from being torn down. The renovated terminal features a reception area; a lobby with a curved, floating ceiling; a conference room, a pilot’s lounge, offices, restrooms and a patio that opens onto the runway apron. High-end finishes throughout the facility include maple doors and millwork, stone flooring and stone finishes in the restrooms.

The Mission-style terminal, designed by Lenvik & Minor Architects, is in keeping with the city of Santa Barbara’s mandate that the structure be consistent with the architecture of city buildings and the main airport terminal.

The newly expanded one-acre parking lot for the FBO accommodates nearly 100 automobiles, while the airport apron was extended an additional two acres. A significant amount of ground water threatened to hold up construction of the apron and parking lot. The RMS Group worked with civil engineers to develop a dewatering plan so that construction could proceed on schedule.

The RMS Group was careful to create a barrier during construction of both projects so that the operating side of the airport wouldn’t be disrupted. A temporary FBO was built while the existing terminal was being renovated. The RMS Group also built a temporary ramp so that automobiles and airplanes could be easily accessed.

The RMS Group, Inc. Completes Newport Orthopedic Institute’s New State-of-the-Art Facility

The RMS Group was the general contractor for the 50,000-square-foot orthopedic medical office and outpatient surgery center in Newport Beach, Calif.

WESTMINSTER, CALIF– June 30, 2006 –- Newport Orthopedic Institute (NOI) has opened the doors to a 42,000 square foot cutting-edge medical office and outpatient surgery center, Orthopedic Surgery Center of Orange County (OSCOC), that features computer-assisted medical technology. NOI, which provides medical care in every major orthopedic specialty, chose Westminster, Calif.-based The RMS Group to serve as the project’s general contractor.

OSCOC’s 8,500 square foot surgery center includes four (4) state-of-the-art operating rooms as well as pre-op, post-op and sterilization facilities. The operating room equipment electronically interfaces with a Class A conference center which serves as a training center which also includes live video feeds direct from the operating rooms. The customized medical offices consist of 35 exam rooms, two x-ray suites that offer film-less technology, a MRI suite and a physical therapy facility.

In addition to managing the construction of NOI’s new facility, The RMS Group coordinated the work of the project’s design consultants. For example, RMS Group project managers worked with designers as well as medical equipment-maker General Electric to coordinate the design of NOI’s x-ray suites and MRI room. They also managed the design and installation of a sound-masking system throughout the offices and surgery center. This system helps ensure that conversations among the NOI staff and patients remain confidential.

To comply with the requirements of The Irvine Company, which owns the building that houses NOI, The RMS Group carried out several modifications to the exterior of the facility. This included specifying exterior exit doors that blend with the building’s existing aluminum frame glass, and ensuring that the concrete that surrounds the landscaping matches a custom color.

The RMS Group completed the entire project within a tight schedule. Construction of the medical offices was finished in four months and the surgery center in six months.
